Marty and i have been so busy producing the show that we’ve barely had time to actually play games, and that’s a downer. I did manage to sneak in some play time with the guys from Dice With Death. Our friend Terry was in from Boston for the day and Bret was kind enough to host for the day.
We played Thunderstone and a blast from the past Shadowrun.
If you like quick deck building games then Thunderstone is right up your alley. The basic game plays from 1-5 players and games last between 45 minutes and an hour. The mechanics are simple and rules can be learned in about 5 to 10 minutes. The beauty is in the replay value. Each player can quickly develop their own strategy and card combos. Alderac has been developing expansions for a while so, if you like the game there are some tasty add ons.
We moved onto Shadowrun which came out around the time Magic was firmly capturing the CCG market. We all missed the boat on this one, Luckily we had a friend that worked for FASA at the time and he turned us onto this gem. If you like short fast games, this is not the one for you.
I think this game got a bum rap. It borrows some of the mechanics from Magic ( but doesn’t almost every CCG ). It differed from Magic in that it allowed you to have up to four players all going after the same objectives. Each objective has a victory point value. The player that gets 100 victory points wins and the way the game is set up players can seriously mess with each others progress. Our game of 4 lasted a solid 4 hours.
Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
