Isle of Skye : A Play The Game Boardgame Review

Recently, while at Gen Con 2016, I picked up a copy of the Kennerspiel de Jahres 2016 award winner, Isle of Skye.  And I can tell you right now, I’m very happy to have done so. In Isle of Skye, players take on the roles of Scottish Clan Lords, involved in the purchasing of land to help further increase their control of the Isle of Skye.  At least, thematically, this is what the game is about. Broken down into a five round game, each player…

Pandemic: Legacy

Alex, Jason, Molly and I have all decided to test our friendship.  We have, as a group, purchased a copy of Pandemic: Legacy.  I’ll chart our progress here as we go. The number of games that can be played range from 12 to 24.  If we successfully complete our objectives every month, we will save the world in twelve months time.  If we don’t, well, that number of plays becomes much higher. Follow us here as we test our mettle and the bonds of friendship…

Castles of Mad King Ludwig

In the tile-laying game Castles of Mad King Ludwig, players are tasked with building an amazing, extravagant castle for King Ludwig II of Bavaria…one room at a time. You see, the King loves castles, having built Neuschwanstein (the castle that inspired the Disney theme park castles) and others, but now he’s commissioned you to build the biggest, best castle ever — subject, of course, to his ever-changing whims. Each player acts as a building contractor who is adding rooms to the castle he’s building…

13th Age

My gaming group finds themselves in the middle of a 10 week/10 level campaign of Pelgrane Press‘ 13th Age, the offspring of the d20 system, birthed by veteran creators Rob Heinsoo and Jonathan Tweet. Stayed tuned here for weekly updates as the gang makes their way through the Dragon Empire and the ultimate (and perhaps untimely) destinies that await them. Chapter 1:  Blood and Thunder Chapter 2: Harvest of Innocence Chapter 3: The Siege of Fort Cragblast Chapter 4: Dark Horizon Chapter 5: Silence is…

Timeline: Discoveries

Timeline by Asmodee Games – I’ve reviewed the original Timeline in the past and last night my wife and I sat down to break open one of it’s expansions.  The Discoveries expansion covers a timeline spanning from -7,000,000 to 1996,  covering events such as the discovery of Angor Wat to the creation of Insulin and gives you plenty of room to prove your historical knowledge with a good deal of swagger and a little accuracy.  Knowing the difference between when Cro-magnon Man and Homo Sapiens first…

Seasons

My wife and I sat down the other night to give this a play.  We have a standing “agreement” that we will sit down at least once a week and play a board game.  This, of course, usually turns into us playing more than one game, but also, unfortunately, tends to get pushed back later and later and eventually, this week becomes next week.   Sometimes that becomes next month and then…well, I don’t even what to think about what comes after that.  Such…

Puppet Wars

Puppet Wars gives you insight into the lives of Puppets when no one is around to watch. It’s simple, just find the other army’s leader, and rip him. If he’s more frayed thread than stuffing, you’ve won. Start by wielding Pins and Needles to go on the offensive, or Hide Under the Bed if your enemy approaches. Animate all your friends from your Toy Box or yell Mine! to take over your opponent’s Toy Box so he has nowhere left to sew up the…

Takenoko

A delightful game about growing bamboo to keep a ravenous panda content.  Tile placement and judicious use of limited actions all in an attempt to accomplish goals and capture points lead to a competitive and fun game.  Look for a more in depth review in a future episode of the podcast!
